Everton and Celtic have also shown an interest in the Irishman who has just enjoyed an impressive season in the Championship with Brian McDermott's beaten play-off finalists.
He has been watched on several occasions by Alan Pardew and his coaching staff in recent months and seems certain to be moving on from the Madejski Stadium in the coming months.
McDermott said: "I'm aware of interest in Shane Long. How confident am I we can ward off that interest? Not very."
The Magpies are ready to turn to Long if top target Kevin Gameiro rejects their advances after they tabled a £10m bid to Lorient for the French international.
Gameiro is vowing to make a decision about his future after France's double-header with Belarus and Poland, but it's thought he is leaning towards a move to either Valencia or Paris St Germain.
