The 31-year-old believes too few were being asked to do too much last season and pinpoints the lack of resources at Owen Coyle's disposal for a faltering end to a campaign that had promised much more than a 14th place finish.
Knight is convinced a few extra bodies would make a big difference and help the club push on to the next level after a few seasons of struggle.
The defender told the Bolton News: "The players have been fantastic but I do believe it's time for a revamp.
"We have to go into next season stronger and hopefully the chairman does stick to his word and bring players in because we have got a small squad.
"There were times when we couldn't even fill the bench. We need a bigger squad with better, more experienced players.
"If we can get those little additions of quality to the squad then I think we will push on and get into Europe next year."
